Good thread w/ general portfolio advice! I see a lot of ppl w/ vis dev or char design portfolios, but there’s so many other available roles—bg design/paint/prop/fx/color etc are equally integral! (Also my show doesn’t separate chars/props—our designers draw chars, props & fx!) https://twitter.com/lozzadraws/status/1290353885538684928
My 2 cents: for Color Design portfolios regardless of experience, I look for someone with good color sense, ideally with a variety of palettes. Examples of a char/prop colored multiple ways and/or work demonstrating your sense of local color, lighting & expressive color are great
BG Paint portfolios: good color sense w/ different palettes/lighting. Some shows are graphic & colorful, others are painterly & realistic, so an AD may be looking for someone w/ particular skills or technique. Examples of different environments are great—city vs nature vs inside
The individual skills & POV you bring to the table are valuable. Though I think animation also values flexibility more than illustration does—being able to adapt & collaborate with the particular style or palette or tone of a show is useful. Every show is different!
