Head nurse, Park Haeng Ja and antisocial personality disorder - a thread:
Before we get into it I need to mention that I’m a licensed clinical psychologist, in practice since 2015. Anyone who’s been following me for over a year knows that. Thus, this thread is going to be informative more than argumentative.
Another thing, it’s important that you guys understand there are rules to diagnose. You can’t go around telling people or assuming they have ASPD because you read it on Twitter. Do not fall into that trap please. Now, let’s get down to business, shall we?
First of all, ASPD falls under cluster B of personality disorders. Cluster B are generally dramatic, erratic, impulsive, and act on extreme emotions. In addition, ASPD have complete disregard for and violation of the rights of others. And are entirely self-serving.
There are “unofficial” subtypes of ASPD, popularly known as psychopathy and sociopathy. These are NOT interchangeable terms. Every professional knows that. However, it would take too long to explain. So just trust me when I tell you Nurse Park is a psychopath.
Criteria #1 repeated acts that are ground for arrest. Nurse Park instigated the murder of/possibly murdered two patients at least, broke into the cursed castle repeatedly, stole the butterfly brooch, etc
#2 gaslighting, deceit, use of aliases. (Yes all these fall under #2). Nurse Park’s whole identity is an alias. She led KT to find that picture and tried getting into ST’s head, to name a few
#3 impulsivity. This is the one criterion I don’t think applies to Nurse Park.
#4 irritability and aggression. I used these two scenes in particular because she has the same reaction in both. In the first, she restrained her impulse. The second, she acted on it.
#5 complete disregard for the safety of others. We don’t know yet what exactly she did to ST. But what we do know is that he’s not safe.
#6 consistent irresponsiblity. Pretty much encompasses everything she’s done. An example is again whatever she did to Sang Tae
#7 lack of remorse. Very crucial point.
#8 lack of empathy. She watched Moon Young get choked, not only did nothing but also made the comment “it serves you right. You shouldn’t have come here.”
#9 inflated self-appraisal. She very likely believes she’s the greatest schemer that ever lived.
There are other diagnostic features that are crucial as well. E.g. like I said they’re entirely self-serving. Nurse Park worked at the hospital to watch KDH die, befriended ST, made Juri go up to MY, everything serves a purpose in her agenda.
Moreover, psychopaths are not wired for arousal. Their brain doesn’t work out “fear.” Like in these situations where she should be reasonably afraid, she’s seen manically laughing instead.
Another thing is that psychopaths don’t really care if you call them a psychopath. They’d literally go “eh big deal” and shrug it off like it’s nothing. Here we see her having no issues admitting she relates cruel horror stories.
Also, psychopaths make great salesmen because they have a knack for spotting a person’s weakness and cater to it. Nurse Park understood that MY’s weakness is KT and KT’s weakness is his brother and played on that chord to gain their trust.
Last but not least, psychopaths are extremely meticulous. They are clean cut no mess left. Usually work within a plan and often have some type of “signature.” Nurse Park’s staple is a book. Everything leads back to this book.
At the end, I want to reiterate what I mentioned at the beginning. Do NOT go around diagnosing people with ASPD based on this thread. There’s a whole lot more to it. This is only the tip of the iceberg.
My concluding point here is that based on everything you read, it’s imperative to me that the show makes it a point to take back MY’s “diagnosis” because as you can see, she doesn’t fit the mold.
