Today I attempt to answer a very important question for myself and the series.

Is Shantae misogynistic?

Well, here are my thoughts..

1/11
In the oxford dictionary, Misogyny is defined as:

"dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women."

In this thread I'm going to look at the three themes of this definition: Dislike, Contempt, and Prejudice.

The first thing to understand is that Sexual Objectification does have a correlation with Misogyny, but they are not the same. Objectification does not equate to Misogyny.

Shantae is unquestionably objectifying, and it has never masked this.

moving forward..

Dislike-

Does Shantae dislike women?

No, it doesn't. In fact, it likes women. The Protagonist and Antagonist are both women that are portrayed as powerful and respectable. Almost every major character is a woman. So with the vagueness of the word "like" I'll say no.

4/11
Contempt -

Does Shantae portray contempt for women?

Well, there are very little signs of this. For Wayforward, there has never been any reported feminine discrimination in the company. Its possible that Shantae has biases for women, but literal contempt seems a stretch.

5/11
Prejudice - 1

This is where it gets complicated. I may need several tweets here.

Is Shantae prejudice against women?

Maybe. It depends on whether you consider the physical portrayal of women in the games as being biased against women players...

6/11
Prejudice 2 -

The games themselves vary on their levels of objectification, but they all have some form of it. Over the years, the youthful appearance for the women characters has gotten uncomfortably dialed backward. This is most certainly for the stereotype male gaze...

7/11
Prejudice 3 -

On top of this, the characters seem to have had a slight reduction in behavioral agency, a direct result of Wayforward counting on sexual appeal to sell it. So, in terms of prejudice, the games themselves are not so, but...

8/11
Prejudice 4 -

Wayforward should be careful. It has certainly targeted a male audience in its objectification. I think, that if Wayforward wants an easy and costless way to make Shantae grow as a series, it should consider making its humorous objectification more universal.

9/11
Prejudice 5 -

So, it is possible to say that it is prejudice towards women, but its is not directly so. To be as fair as possible, I will say that Shantae is only sometimes prejudice against women, but only to its audience and not to its characters

10/11.
To conclude this thread, I do not think that Shantae is Misogynistic.

There does exist a community of misogynistic individuals that would take the objectification too far, but such exists everywhere.

Yet, Wayforward should consider its feminine audience a little more.
