In Cottonwood Heights for several scheduled protests. The first is in support of the police dept. Lots of US flags. A couple Trump flags.
Just walked past a guy with a Proud Boys tattoo. Seeing some firearms in the crowd, as well.
More arriving. Several look to be carrying rifles.
Not everyone here to support the PD is comfortable w/ guns. “We look like we’re in the army,” said Cottonwood Heights resident Debbie Moss.
BLM activists arrive. “We can say we matter, right?” Jacarri Kelley said. She told me this counterprotest is a show of white supremacy.
Cottonwood Heights officers passing this out now
After a man wearing a confederate flag passed, Kelley said, “Do you know how many of my ancestors died in the name of the confederate flag?”
Casey Robertson, founder of Utah Citizens’ Alarm, on the guns/bulletproof vests: “We’re dealing with some violent people.”
The guy with the confederate flag face mask. Most of the Utah Citizens’ Alarm guys are refusing to speak with me.
Josianne Petit, founder of Mama & Papa Panthers: “You can’t ignore that this is an element of intimidation”
The Utah Citizens’ Alarm guys have positioned themselves on either side of the protestors against police violence.
Yelling breaks out between the militia demonstrators and the protestors against police violence
A Proud Boy arguing with police violence demonstrators
The Proud Boy guy again
Protestors against police violence chant, “Hands up, don’t shoot!”

The militia guys respond, “Don’t rob.”

Another calls marchers “sheep”
Now I’m at a rally organized by the family of Zane James, who was shot & killed by Cottonwood Heights PD
Didn’t hear this at first in my video. “White people rule” at :33 https://twitter.com/bigfootiscain/status/1290456954813460488
This man lives in the neighborhood where yesterday’s march happened. He says local police need to be open to reform.
Josianne Petit asks demonstrators to each go home and file complaints against Cottonwood Heights Police Chief Russo
SWAT and the armed militiamen are heading to the park now, Petit says. She tells people to disperse peacefully in groups.
Not seeing any police yet, but a lot of protestors are upset that officers would break up their rally but didn’t bother the militia group
Opposite sides of the street near the police department
The two groups clash briefly
A couple Trump supporters in giant trucks have been passing by, trying to drown out BLM protest
Another view of the two sides of the street
BLM group chants “shame on you” at the Cottonwood Heights officer on the other side of the street
This side of the street chants, “Black lives matter,” while the other side replies, “all lives matter.”
“You are on the wrong side of history,” Lex Scott of Black Lives Matter shouts to the militia group.
Another one of those Trump trucks
