#AskingAutistics:
Is not being able to stick to self imposed rules, deadlines, w/e an #ActuallyAutistic (assuming #PossiblyADHDAwaitingAssessmentOnTheGatekeepingNHS is not a tag) thing or is it a human wide thing? Does anyone actually stick to rules they make themselves?
Like if I tell myself "once you do X, you can have Y" - it DOESN'T WORK. I just go "okay but I can have Y now?". Like it's as if my brain goes "yeah we know the person that made that rule and we have it on good authority that that person is certified full of shit!"
Me: If we do this it will be good for our wellbeing/health/productivity
Also me: Yeah, I don't follow rules for anyone, and that includes self imposed rules made for our own wellbeing!
I know that it's an ADHD thing to be very externally motivated and not be able to motivate yourself so I'm wondering if it's like that? And if it is that, I wonder if this is something widely recognised enough that a doctor would go "Mm, sounds like ADHD" or not.
Is there an #AskingNeurotypicals tag? Now I want to know. Can you stick to self imposed rules (like going to bed at a certain time, or a deadline, or like not eating all the ice cream you bought yourself as a reward for finishing your work before you finished your work 🙃)
(Obviously the above poll is super unscientific but, hey, it's twitter and we only have 4 options. Feel free to clarify in the replies! Also if anyone has tips for sticking to rules without an external person enforcing them, hmu, I need em)
It's a weird one because I also have a lot of PDA traits so I tend to avoid any sort of demand at all and hate any rule or deadline BUT I can be motivated with an external reward.
However I can't motivate myself. I tried making myself a star chart and was like "if I get X stars I will buy a nice coffee!" and I was like "but I'm a grown adult with control over my own finances, I can buy a coffee whenever?".
