John Hume didn’t get into politics to end the IRAs campaign. He got into politics to combat gerrymandering, sectarian government and targeted discrimination of his community. This is getting erased and it’s maddening
Nothing is simple here - it never has been and I’m never not stunned at how many times people are shown this and are still wilfully dense about it
It’s a cop out meaning there is no disussion of the “no fenian litter” politics of the time, he wasn’t on the beach at Magilligan Strand marching for Peace, he was marching against the human rights abuse that was internment
This is not a justification for violence and people who didn’t live it and have comfort of distance should keep their hot takes on justifying it and why it was needed, to themselves - especially given the week that’s in it. You’ll never know what the killing did here. Accept that
Im muting this, but all I know is, in the rush to write a cool, neutral ‘balanced’ peace about him, journalists ignore that John didn’t just promise peace was possible, but that equality, fair access to housing, jobs and voting rights was possible too. That’s so important
