🧵🧵🧵🧵

Okay so I’m about to write a thread on the topic I was reluctant to talk about on the tl last night since many are now intrigued to hear it. Before I start I want to say, in no way do I want to offend anyone, I just want to have a discussion and hear people’s POV’s🤗
So I want to discuss about how many black brits from francophone counties feel out of place or not represented enough in black British culture. In my experiences I feel as though the black British culture is heavily influenced on Jamaican and Nigerian culture. (1)
This is in no way a negative thing, I appreciate and value the influence both countries have on the black British culture, but as a francophone I see there’s a lack of representation in the culture compared to places like France and Belgium. (2)
Now I don’t know if this is because there aren’t as many francophone communities in the UK compared to Nigerian and Jamaican communities and this may be why we aren’t as represented. (3)
This also intrigued me to think ‘is this why many brits from francophone countries can’t speak their native language?’ Is it because they’re not surrounded but a community allowing them to learn and practice, therefore only being able to understand (Receptive Bilingualism). (4)
I now want to shift the discussion to the togetherness the black community in France and Belgium potray compared to the UK. Idk if you’ve seen on the tl but there was recently a friendly football tournament that took place in France against two francophone communities. (5)
Here’s footage posted from the tournament:
The main consensus the video got from ppl from the UK was “the UK could never” and I asked myself, why? Aside from policing is it because Afro-Caribbean communities are so divided? (6)
Feel free to discuss your POV’s but please be respectful of others🥺
I’ll be adding more points to the thread but I want to see what you guys have to say👀
