Unpopular opinion: Rami Malek playing a pharaoh is *still* racist.
Egypt's history can be divided in 6 great periods. The 1st being the predynastic period (speaks for itself) and the 2nd being Ancient Egypt, the period in which the pharaohs ruled. They looked like Black Ethiopians, yet Hollywood casted a post-Greco-Roman Egyptian representative.
"He's Egyptian", none of you realise that racism is not as much about the race itself as it is about the physical appearance of a certain race being the target of discrimination.
"He's Copt." The Egyptian gods represented in the movie didn't stan Copt.
"I'm EgYpTiAn So ShUT uP" I'm actually Copt Egyptian myself. + I did my history research on both Egyptian history and Copt history. + I've experienced racism myself and it was about my appearance and NOT the accuracy of my ethnic identity. + In (historic) movies visuals matter.
The Ethiopians👇 "Aithiopia" was first coined by ancient Greek writers to mean the east-central African region that they believed was the cultural and ethnic predecessor of Kemet (ancient Egypt). In other words, the ancient Egyptians were descendants of Ethiopians and Somalians.
"That is colorist." Not only do Africans have different skintones, Ancient Egyptians actually lightened their skin. But there is more to appearance than color.
Coptic Egyptians have never been part of the Ancient Egyptian dynasty. Otherwise Anubis would have looked like.. Jesus.
Misunderstanding number 1:
"Rami Malek isn't racist for playing an Egyptian character, he is Egyptian himself."
First of all, I'm not calling an actor racist. The choice of the director to pick him as a Ancient Egyptian protagonist is.
I'll argue why.. even though no one asked 🤷‍♀️
Next to casting a Copt for the first protagonist Ancient Egyptian, the director chose to cast a Jewish person to play the Ancient Egyptian brother. A choice that seems innocent, but knowing the director is Jewish and made obvious references to Judaism, makes it.. questionable.
Secondly, he didn't play just any Egyptian role, he played an Ancient Egyptian royal in a movie about a history museum. Yes, Hollywood made these mistakes before, but those were transparent. What's being overlooked here is that Euro/Asian Egyptians are mistaken for the real ones.
With "real ones" I mean: most accurate depiction of the subject matter.
Misunderstanding number 2:
"Ancient Egyptian mummy DNA suggests Modern Egyptians have more in common with African DNA than Ancient Egypt does."
A few studies have continiously been send to me about this suggestion. I read them, they both admitted to being *incomplete* (below).
Misunderstanding number 3:
"You're afrocentric."
Again, I've Copt. Egyptian ancestry myself. That is where my interest started. If I'd be Afrocentric I would have *first* looked at Egyptian history with the intention to find an African root, that hasn't been my path, respectfully
Misunderstanding #4:
The pictures I have used of the tribe and the Anubis statue portray dark skin. Many people in the comments have made that the issue of the discussion. But like I said in the colorist-explanation tweet, that is NOT my argument. African skin has many shades.
SIDE NOTE: I'M OPEN TO DEBATE. I CAN'T DEBATE A SIMPLE "UR WRONG" THO. READ THE THREAD, FIND ARGUMENTS AGAINST MY ARGUMENTS, AND I WILL RESPOND REASONABLY.
Also: Thank you for taking the time to care if you're not Copt or defending a stan. I appreciate your sensitivity to racism.
