Why Sonic Unleashed is a Masterpiece. (X360 and PS3 version)
A thread.
First off, the story.
You start off with one of the best if not the best opening to a sonic game ever conceived, setting up the awesome stakes at hand to get you ready for a tale about two friends trying to rebuild the world.
Chip is a greaaat character. Sonic and His relationship is strengthened because they both need each other. Sonic is struggling to cope with his new form while Chip gives him the support he needs to keep on going. And sonic does the same for chip with his memory loss.
Throughout the story the two support each other and become best buds, exploring the world meeting inhabitants throughout. Culminating into a PHENOMANAL epic final act of infiltrating eggmanland and fighting as super sonic and gaia colossus against dark gaia.
Even the smaller moments, they are really good and throughout the dialogue is spot on great! The story is just great throughout. And Yknow what? The villagers get so overlooked! There dialogue is legitimately entertaining and each person has there own personality.
It helps to make each location feel very alive, and I always enjoyed reading each dialogue box, as well as seeing all the varied and great towns people designs.
Speaking of the Hub Worlds!! Like idc I love these places. It helps to make each location distinct. When sonic comes in he’ll change and better the people by the time he leaves and that’s such a great thing. I love how each has such distinct design too.
Which the entrance stages as well! I love how the further you get you can come back and find new levels, and new secrets to find! It’s good for replay ability but it’s just a nice area to explore and to get to the stages themselves. But it’s not so big that there hard to find!
Now time for that good ol gameplay.
Let’s start with boost. Boost is the first time it’s been in 3D here and boy. From start to finish it’s a blast. The boost stages start off a bit easier, but get progressively more difficult as you continue. The levels are just the right
Length, and your constantly needing to react, and time your jumps, and know when to, and when not to boost to get to the end in the fastest way possible! You cannot complete unleashed mindlessly. You just can’t. Fast reaction time is needed to get through this, and memorization
Of the level design is key to being a speed demon! They have so many paths, and upper routes, and lower routes. There’s a ton here! So the replay ability factor here is through the roof, it’s a pure joyride too go through each of these stages! It’ll always keep ya on your toes!
Let’s now talk the other playstyle werehog! Now lemme get this outta the way. I think the “this isn’t sonic” argument is stupid. Because at the end of the day you can say this about mech and treasure hunting. I’m gonna judge it as it’s own playstyle.
Now as it’s own playstyle it’s fantastically well made. The werehog starts off with a base moveset, but you can learn up to 50 combos to use in battle so your never gonna run out of variety in the only 9 main stages there are.
The enemy variety is actually plentiful! With each one behaving in different ways. The key is to know how to deal with each one the quickest. If you spam the same button that’s on you not utilizing the mechanics presented to you, WHEN AGAIN THERES OVER 50 COMBOS TO USE LMAO.
The level design and platforming is also really cool! The werehog ends up having this gauntlet like level design with some stretchy arms to bat that give him this spiderman like awesomeness when swinging from place to place. It’s really good stuff!
The werehog has a lot of variety in its stage design that gets more hard as it continues and with plenty of collectibles and secrets to find in the stages so you can explore too. It’s a well made and well refined gameplay style that’s truly great!
Now let’s talk about the visuals for a second.
It’s self explanatory this games art style, feel, and presentation is some of the best if not the best in the series. It’s absolutely stunning from start to finish. With nice and great character animations and expressions.
I wanna address medal collecting. Being honest, I love it! It leaves for things to find in stages and insentivizes exploring new paths and places. But your never really gonna find yourself running short until maybe adabat but even then probably not.
Now let’s talk about boss fights! They are really great and give this very cinematic awesome feel. The day boss fights are fast paced and keep you on your toes, the night stages are very focused on making you feel like you conquered a great feat. It’s great stuff!
Now I gotta talk about EGGMANLAND.
An Endurance test of EVERYTHING you learned in unleashed, culminating in this, day and night hybrid stage. This is the ultimate test of skill and it’s fantastic. Punishing level design, this is the ultimate test and it feels awesome to conquer.
Now I must talk about the perfect soundtrack, cause man oh man.. it’s absolutely perfect. The night and day themes just fit the stages absolutely perfectly, I listen to this soundtrack religiously, one of the best if not the best in the series to me.
Even after completion of the game there’s still lots to do! Side missions, extra stages, collectibles, sun and moon medals, hot dog missions, s ranking every stage. There’s a LOT you can do. This games packed with great content, something more sonic games should have.
Is sonic unleashed absolutely perfect? No there is a few flaws. Such as the infamous battle theme interrupting the stage music, some side quests being pointless. But I can’t even list many cause this game just gets everything so right and with style. When I think of
Something that represents sonic so great I think of unleashed. This game I consider a masterpiece because of all of this. It’s a blast from start to finish.
