Okay, I chose to tweet this here bc a lot of you are not mexican. Oof, here I go...

THIS THING HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR OVER 20 YEARS. WE ARE GETTING KILLED EVERYDAY, and its quite sad the intl/american public decided to care up until now. https://twitter.com/dykeshe/status/1289647253766864896
I am a mexican woman who’s lived in Mexico since day 1, so please understand how upset we might be at ppl not wanting/not caring to listen to actual mexican women’s experiences and learn everything from a stan twitter thread.

I’ll make a couple of points to clarify stuff:
- These killings are NOT always related to narco violence. Mexican culture is deeply rooted in misoginy. Some femicides have happened in middle class “safe” environments.

- Trans women GET KILLED TOO, this is not a cis women only issue. Again, it’s all tied down to misoginy.
- Women from all ages get killed and raped everyday. We all know official numbers aren’t accurate.

- I’ve been going to protests against femicides for the last 5 years. Since then I’ve seen more young girls participating in the conversation!

- WE DO NOT NEED TO BE SAVED
I am very wary of how these issues are seen thru an american lens, so again, I’d suggest yall to get info from mexican activists/feminists. Might do a tweet another day mentioning some !
Side not: i am NOT an activist, but i am a woman who’s anxiety sky rockets whenever I need to take the bus at night or get into an uber cab when its late. Not only could I suffer from sexual abuse, I could get killed.
I am privileged enough to be be surounded by loved ones who check on me, among race + clase factors. But most women aren’t and they are the ones we MUST be loud for and demand justice.

We are tired of living in a country where we are not seen as entirely human.
