Unpopular opinion: I don't believe in harsher sentences for so-called "hate crimes" nor in the shunning or punishment of homophobic people. Violence is already illegal, and I don't need everyone to love me nor to approve of my orientation.
If someone says "being gay is unnatural & gross," it doesn't make me feel any sort of way. People are allowed their opinions, even ones I think are shitty. I'll just think they're wrong without feeling the need to silence or shun them, as long as they're otherwise respectful.
Why? Because having opinions most consider backwards doesn't make someone a terrible person, and ruining their lives over it isn't going to suddenly make them change their mind — the opposite is far more likely, in fact.
Something that's very lacking lately is the ability to disagree with people without having a nervous breakdown, flying into a rage or treating them like garbage. It's easy showing charity and empathy to those your agree with; the real test is being kind to people you loathe.
