The hate for @TheEllenShow seems to break down like this: 50% the inauthentic disconnect that she masquerades as the nicest person in the world and is quite mean, 40% that people just like to see someone in power fall from grace,& 10% political (she’s friends with GW Bush). 1/8
The reality is that plenty of employers are mean. Period. Hollywood is riddled with full blown abuse, beyond simple meanness. If your employment is at-will, you can leave if you think your work environment is “toxic.” There’s no requirement that everything be sunshine. 2/8
Plenty of the most effective and successful founders I’ve worked with or seen in venture-backed companies (which is my experience area, but it’s not limited to them) are “difficult” personalities. It sucks but it’s not illegal. Your boss is an asshole, you can leave. 3/8
It feels like employees in recent years truly believe they are entitled to work with and for people who are nice 100% of the time. Sorry: the goal is to be a successful company, not be your best friend or nurturing figure. It’s a job, not a retreat. 4/8
When I’ve dealt with this myself, I reached a point where I was done and quit. I found better opportunities because of it. I didn’t stick around and complain. Leaving is scary but ultimately I was better off for it. 5/8
Founders and employers need to be able to do their jobs without walking on eggshells around their employees, worrying if their failure to say hi to people every day is going to get them in trouble. Results > niceness. 6/8
Of course, you can’t be outright abusive or illegal in your behavior. But “toxicity” or “abuse” is a fucking high bar, not “she was a dick sometimes.” This is work, not kumbaya. 7/8
Founders and business leaders have enough to deal with beyond “am I treating every single person I work with like someone I care deeply about?” They don’t, and they shouldn’t have to act like it. It’s an unnecessary and excessive ask of them. 8/8
#ReplaceEllen is just another cancelation attempt. And before anyone says that cancelation isn& #39;t real and/or only affects privileged people, read this ONE example (out of hundreds of regular people who have dealt with this): https://quillette.com/2020/07/30/think-cancel-culture-doesnt-exist-my-own-lived-experience-says-otherwise/">https://quillette.com/2020/07/3...
