English tabloid The Daily Mail has just published leaked police body camera footage of the time before and during George Floyd's killing. (It's graphic so people should approach with caution. Here's the link without image: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8576371/Police-bodycam-footage-shows-moment-moment-arrest-George-Floyd-time.html
This body camera footage appears to be that of former Officer Thomas Lane, who is charged in aiding and abetting murder and manslaughter in Floyd's death. It's not clear whether the Daily Mail obtained the entire more than one hour of body cam footage from two officers.
At least part of the Daily Mail footage appears to be taken off a laptop screen. Members of the media and public were allowed to view on laptops but banned from recording. A coalition of media orgs is fighting restrictions on the videos in court, arguing evidence should be public
Recording would violate court rules, and likely spark investigation. I talked to Thomas Lane's attorney Earl Gray who said he doesn't know anything about the leak, and expressed frustration that the judge hasn't yet issued an order one whether he will make the evidence public.
It's important to note that "chequebook journalism," paying for leaks from people with access to footage or evidence, is common practice in English tabloids. It's not acceptable for mainstream American journalists.
