Ebonics = Black diasporic dialects.

AAVE (African American Vernacular English) = Black American dialects.

AAVE is just a form of Ebonics that is specific to Americans. https://twitter.com/pouvoir87/status/1289744921188999169
I cannot wait for this episode @LanguageNoire 😩😩
Ebonics = Ebony + Phonics

It was coined to define the languages spoken by African slave descendants of West Africa, the Caribbean as well as America. https://twitter.com/digital_crates/status/1290342591154847747?s=19
In his own book, Williams (1975) defines Ebonics as "Linguistic and para-linguistic features which on a concentric continuum represent the communicative competence of the West African, Caribbean, and United States slave descendant of African origin."

Do the reading, I beg.
Why would I make this up???

In 'The Ebonics Controversy' (1997), Williams writes "We know that ebony means black and that phonics refers to speech sounds or the science of sounds. Thus, we are really talking about the science of black speech sounds or language."
Of course you're going to assume Ebonics refers to Black AMERICAN speech because the term was popularized in discussions of Black American students.
I 100% agree with this: https://twitter.com/MyDaleyVibes/status/1290365257647566850?s=19
Before I go:

This tweet isn't meant to disagree w/ or correct the original tweeter.

It's literally just to clear things up for people confused in the replies.

"AAVE" / "AAL" / "Black English" IS Ebonics.

It's literally just different verbiage. https://twitter.com/AliahLuck/status/1290331802356391949?s=19
** Different verbiage specific to Americans.
Love you all but I'm muting this bc I'm easily distracted and not at all in the headspace for some of the nonsense I'm receiving as a result of this thread. ✨ https://twitter.com/AliahLuck/status/1290369482158899200?s=19
