We're kicking off week 2 of the #WFH series with Rebecca Cohen, a rising fifth-year graduate student from the Scripps Whale Acoustics Lab. http://www.cetus.ucsd.edu/
While #WFH, Rebecca is building and evaluating the performance of a deep neural network-based classifier capable of identifying distinct species-specific echolocation clicks in long-term passive acoustic data. #MachineLearning #NeuralNetworks
Rebecca's classifier will aid in the efficient processing of massive acoustic data sets spanning large regions. This classifier will enable us to construct a time series of odontocete species presence at our monitoring sites.
Ultimately, Rebecca is working towards modeling the presence of odontocete species relative to various environmental factors. This will help us understand what drives observed patterns of cetacean distribution and abundance, contributing to effective population management.
Rebecca's dog Kepler helps by looking cute and reminding her to periodically get up from the computer and go for walks.
In her free time at home, Rebecca loves to bake. Though food is always better when it can be shared, for now, only her neighbors get to enjoy it with her. We can't wait until we're back in the lab so she can share her goodies with us!
