If Dortmund had signed Harvey Elliott from Fulham, they’d be selling him back to a PL club in 2 or 3 years for £100m+.
Don’t fucking @ me. This is how you get ahead of the game. Not spunking £170m on Werner & Sancho to rotate off the bench for a combined £600k a week.

Are they good players? Yes, certainly. Does it sting a little that they’re signing for a rival? Yep. Would I trade positions with either of those clubs? Fuck no.
Do either player make our first XI right now? Nope. Would they be happy not to? Nope. Would it cause disharmony? Yep.

This is where I’m at with it all. If Mo or Sadio had pushed to leave this summer, we would have been all over Sancho. But a £200m investment for someone would who initially be a squad player as part of a succession plan, in the current climate, is unrealistic. Let. It. Go.
For clarity, Sancho is an amazing talent. But he wouldn’t start for us right now. Not ahead of Salah. Fight me.
In the future? Absolutely he’d take a starting spot. But he wouldn’t be happy to wait. And we wouldn’t pay him astronomical wages to do so.

Also, this isn’t really about Elliott per se. It’s about our current position & how we gradually replace the front 3. We either replace them as they leave or we spot a replacement early before they become a superstar. We can’t buy a superstar and phase them in over 12/18 months.
Because they wouldn’t be happy with that and it makes zero financial sense in the current market. Unless your state / oligarch funded, it’s unrealistic.
Without Covid, I think Werner was nailed on. Not as expensive, rotate him in, AFCON in Jan 2021. It made sense. But finances..

...taking a hit and AFCON being put back to 2022 changed the landscape.
That’s all I’m saying. Not denigrating players because they’re going to a rival. They’re both excellent. It just didn’t make sense and neither start for us *right now*. I stand by that.
Peace. X

Predictably, here come the “we only started winning when we spent £60m on Alisson and £75m on Virgil” shouts. Those purchases were made because of a glaring hole in each area. You don’t invest £200m on a player, in this climate, that isn’t an absolute necessity. Muting this now.
Some people are now missing the point too. I’m not advocating us using the Dortmund model. I’m advocating cutting out the expensive middle man by getting young talent into our system earlier and bringing them through. Like Harvey Elliott, as an example.
Final thing, for those saying I’m some FSG arselicker - get fucked. They’ve made mistakes. They aren’t perfect. I’ve called them out. I got pelters from some because of how hard I criticised their furlough decision. I wouldn’t actually be adverse to them investing more of their..
...own money for signings etc. But I also appreciate that they arrived wanting to improve every aspect of the club and make it self sustainable. The issue on here is the lack of middle ground - if you don’t hate them, you *must* love them. Which is bullshit.
And no, I’m not comparing Elliott to Sancho. I used Elliott as an example of what could/would have happened if Dortmund had signed him instead of us. It’s not about the individual players in question and I didn’t think it was hard to understand my point. Obtuse motherfuckers.
