I had the craziest realization last night: I benefitted from college athletics as much as Trevor Lawrence did. Trevor Lawrence brings in millions of dollars to his university. I filmed the games featuring the athletes making money for the university.
Yet, according to our colleges, our work was valued the same. We both had tuition paid for. In some ways, I actually had more freedom. 1) I had more time for other things and less responsibilities. 2) if I wanted to or could, I could profit off my own name.
There is something so fundamentally wrong with this. In no world was I close to as valuable to my university as Trevor Lawrence is to his. It isn’t so much that I got what I didn’t deserve (I think I worked for that money) but athletes clearly are not getting what they deserve.
When I traveled with WSU soccer, I had it so much easier than the athletes. I literally was able to relax in the pool drinking mai-tais while the athletes were practicing. Yet we were valued the same. Something needs to change.
