Yesterday we talked about how we send a frame! But we didn’t touch too much on a key component in that process and how it works - THE SWITCH.
No, not this Switch - although this was a bop.
THIS SWITCH. The one we use in networking to connect our devices through their cute little ports and MAC address.
So how does this work? Well once our data gets to our switch - the switch decides who our data goes to based on the MAC address.

MAC addresses are like telephone numbers. & most of the time our switch sends the data directly to who we want if it knows the number!
MACs are unique to each device in a network and NO two devices will EVER have the same MAC address.

MAC addresses are written in hexadecimal format (made up of letters and numbers) and are 48 bits long.
8 bits = 1 byte - so that means MAC addresses are 6 bytes long. Essentially a byte is just a chunk. Like a bite of a cookie 😂

The first 3 bytes (24 bits) are the Orginizationally Unique Identifier or Vendor ID and this is assigned by the IEEE.
The last 3 bytes (24 bits) are the Network Interface Controlloer also called the serial ID. This number is assigned by the manufacturer.
Now if our switch has seen a particular MAC address before - its no issue. Our data is going directly where we want it to go.

It’s just like texting your bestie. You know that number by heart without thinking about it. You don’t go scrolling your contacts - you just know!
Now, when a switch DOESN’T know a MAC address...how the heck does it send data?

It does this through the use of a broadcast MAC address 💻

Broadcasts go out to ALL devices and when the right device responds saying “Hey that message was for us!” ....
The switch adds that new MAC address to its very own handy dandy phonebook - a MAC address table!
And that my friends - is a switch! Did you learn something? 😅 I really hope so!
