Right, this one is for all my #NIFilmmakers. There is a real lack of support (financial & distribution in my opinion) for anyone that is trying to pursue a career in filmmaking that lives in the North of Ireland. Why is this? I need answers. (1/?)
I see the opportunities that are available for people in Scotland, Wales, London, Manchester, Liverpool, other regions in England etc. Back home we have @NIScreen - which are fab fab fab - but why don't we have more? We need it. (2/?)
There is so much talent back home, but how can you let it grow if there isn't enough support out there? Do what I did? Move away to London? That can't be the only answer. (3/?)
Side-note: I moved away to London for 2 reasons. One, I felt like it was the only option if I wanted a career in film. I had an amazing time at @LSBU/ @LSBU_ACI. And two, I felt that being myself and gay back home was going to be too big of a struggle. (3.5/?)
So no. We can't just keep suggesting for creatives to move away. We NEED more opportunities NOW. I know that people are being brought in from the UK to work on big productions based in NI. Why are we doing that? Possibly because we aren't training our own? (4/?)
Also, why is everything East/Belfast based? We do exist outside of the big smoke. And we're here. We want to get involved. The opportunities are just not there for us. (5/?)
You've got the fantastic people over at the @nerve_centre in Derry, who I cannot thank enough as without them and especially @ek2471, I would not be where I am today. They opened my eyes to filmmaking and I will be forever grateful. But again, where do we go next? (6/?)
So c'mon, where are the opportunities to allow filmmakers to CREATE and tell their STORIES??? (7/?)
And distribution. OH BOY WHERE DO I START? People are out there creating on a tight budget (and when I say tight budget I mean their own money), but then what? We create/tell these stories so that they can be seen. But are they? (8/?)
Yes there are a few film festivals in NI which is fantastic, but where are they all based? Oops you got it, Belfast. Except for @FoyleFilm. This is one of the big reasons in which I decided to set up @TriRiversFest. We need more - and the audiences want it too. (9/?)
To my knowledge, and correct me if I'm wrong. @TriRiversFest is the only film festival that is based outside of a city in NI. Again, why? We need to branch out, give filmmakers more opportunities to show off their work within their community and further afield. (10/?)
I also believe that there needs to be more taught to filmmakers in NI about distribution. What do you do once you're done? Festivals? Online? Sell it? Keep it on a hard-drive and never show anyone? (Hopefully not) (11/?)
I only learnt about distribution as I did it myself, and I still haven't got a clue about half of it. So we can't just expect that filmmakers just figure it out, there needs to be more education on this. (12/?)
I'll probably come back to this thread at some stage to add more tbh. The question mark just leaves you all in suspense. Will he add more? Will he just leave it there? Who knows? If you did read this, thanks. Hopefully things change. (13/?)
