HEY WHILE I'M MAD LET'S TALK ABOUT THE OTHER THING BOTHERJNG ME THIS MORNING WHICH IS INEQUALITY IN THEATRE. THIS INCLUDES HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE, AND #BROADWAY BITCHES.
NUMBER ONE: Fatshaming in theatre. Playwrights: I challenge you to create interesting, canonically fat leads whose personalities aren't "I'm fat." Make more of them young people. I'm sick and tired of playing old maids and old men. Make more Tracy Turnblad's.
Directors: I challenge you to cast fat actors in traditionally skinny roles because fuck you that's why. Give me chubby Juliet. Give me Big n Tall Danny Zuko. Don't discount plus-sized talent just because you've got a mental image of a gyrating John Travolta in your brain.
Cast. Fat. People. In. Fat. Roles. Minimize the use of fats suits just because you want an excuse to not cast a fat person. Y'all know the chick who sings "Plain Jane Fatass" in Bare: A Pop Opera? I haven't seen any versions of her actually played by a plus-sized person.
Musical theatre needs to shut the fuck up with the excuse that fat people don't dance well enough. I mean, I don't dance very well but that's cause I'm a klutz not cause I'm fat. Wanna know how I know? BECAUSE FAT DANCERS FUCKING EXIST and they work SO MUCH HARDER.
Fat dancers face such a stigma in the dance community because people think they'll never be good en ok ugh because they won't starve themselves to try and lose weight. But if you go through Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok you'll find so so so many beautiful plus-sized dancers.
Like @ChloeInCurve, a beautiful dancer who I just found a few weeks ago, there's so much hatred for these people who work three times as hard in order to prove themselves worthy in a community they belong in. (This is similar to the issue of POC dancers vs white dancers but 🤷‍♂️)
So stop forcing fat people to prove that they are worth supporting and showcasing just because you have some fuckled up standards of beauty. This thread got long so imma make a new one about oTHER bullshit in theatre.
