i don’t get why people are quiet when egyptian culture and history is appropriated but when any other culture is appropriated, it’s suddenly the end of the world. i’m not saying it’s okay to appropriate other cultures but speak up for all cultures or else you’re a hypocrite.
not to mention i read an article that said it was okay for black people to appropriate egyptian culture and that the backlash that rihanna and beyonce got for doing photoshoots using egyptian culture was unnecessary. like do not come and tell me you’re allowed to claim egyptian
culture because you’re black. yes, some ancient egyptians were black, just like some modern egyptians are black, but not all ancient egyptians were black, just like not all modern egyptians are black. in fact, there was barely any sub-saharan DNA found in ancient
egyptian mummies so don’t tell me you can claim egyptian culture and history becuase “ancient egyptians were black but then the arabs came and now they’re suddenly not black anymore” when in actuality north africans (yes, even egyptians) barely have any arab DNA. egyptians aren’t
arab. the only reason north africans are called arab is because we speak arabic, but the label in and of itself is incorrect. that’s like calling brazilians portuguese just because they speak that language, or calling canadians french just because they speak that language.
modern egyptians actually have more in common with sub-saharan africa than ancient egyptians had with sub-saharan africa.
like i said, egyptians aren’t arab, we’re north african. yes we have some arab dna, but we also have some european and sub-saharan dna, do we call ourselves either? no. someone might argue that egypt is called “the arab republic of egypt” but in arabic, the word 3arabeya is used
which translates to arabic (the language). 3arab means arab, 3arabeya (feminine form of 3araby since egypt is a feminine word) means arabic. it’s “gomhorayet misr el 3arabeya” which is closer to “the arabic republic of egypt” not “the arab republic of egypt”.
so that being said, with this person’s logic, if black people can claim “some link” to ancient egypt meaning that you can appropriate our culture, then you should have no problem with egyptians saying “we have some sub-saharan DNA, we can claim your culture as well!” right?
but we don’t do that because it’s not right. it’s not our culture to claim, and egyptian culture is not yours to claim either. culture appropriation is not right when it comes to any culture (there is a difference between culture appropriation and appreciation) so
remeber that the next time you preach that culture appropriation is wrong but “it’s okay when we appropriate north african culture” amirite? north african culture (i’m not only talking about egypt, but all of north africa) is appropriated so often but no one ever talks about it.
