Over the past year I have lost 4 different work opportunities after businesses found out about my mental health history.
Not even my current state of health, but the fact I& #39;ve spoken on TV and written about it regularly.
We often forget this type of discrimination. Thread.

Sometimes in difficult moments I almost wish I had a right to forget, as if my health history is a crime. I recently had someone quote my own book at me as a reason they felt my services weren& #39;t right for their company.
I had another contract offer withdrawn after they saw me on TV and felt I hadn& #39;t been & #39;truthful& #39; to them about this.
(It& #39;s on my CV, including where to watch it!).

I& #39;ve had another lie about & #39;concerns about my health& #39; being the reason they & #39;had to let me go& #39; to a mutual business contact. I had resigned myself after they broke our agreement!
I feel like the past 20 years has been a big exercise in talking openly and how it is time to talk. And that& #39;s great.
But then what? If you are a decision maker is having a conversation the limit of how supportive you can be?
We have archaic attitudes to modern business.

Solidarity to anyone that still has to deal with this type of shit in 2020.
Decision makers; history will look on you unfavourably if you do not make steps to ensure this doesn& #39;t happen in your organisation.

I speak to companies and organisations regularly on mental health/disability and the workplace. Happy to come and speak with you too. As are many others. And so many great organisations to advise! Ask questions, don& #39;t assume.
Make those concerned lead your understanding.

P.S Also I think it& #39;s great that there are many examples of good leadership around this issue, but & #39;good& #39; normally just means & #39;doing the decent thing& #39;. I hear a lot on how we should focus on the good eggs.
But that house is not on fire. So I& #39;m focusing on the ones that are.
