Obviously the console ships with a PS5 controller, but for multiplayer etc it would be great to have the option of using your existing controllers.
"we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform" I'm sure they also believe that it would be nice to sell a lot of high margin accessories to anyone who wants to play local multiplayer.
I didn't play any PS4 games that would have been significantly hampered by supporting Dualshock 3.
Interesting element of this news: If a game comes out for PS4, you can use either PS4 or PS5 controller to play it on PS5 via backward compatibility. If it gets a free update to become a native PS5 game, suddenly the PS4 controller will no longer work on it?
That's assuming it works exactly as Sony have said it works.
Seems baffling to me that people might be playing Fortnite split screen on the PS5 day one via BC, then if it gets an update to be a native PS5 game they will have to go and buy an extra controller to continue playing as they were.
I probably wouldn't believe it if Sony's messaging didn't heavily suggest it.
There's going to be so many games that you can play on PC with a PS4 controller but can't play on PS5 with a PS4 controller.
Mentions now full of people telling me we should consider ourselves lucky to be allowed to give Sony more money. Why does a console generation transition bring this narrow-minded idiocy out of the woodwork?
Ultimately I think "if a developer making a game for PS5 wants to implement DS4 support, Sony will block them from doing so" is bad, and slightly lessens the appeal of PS5. It's not worth getting upset about, but it's a decision I disagree with.
