As an ED physician in NYC who saw too much death and morbidity from COVID, including in previously healthy non-obese young people, I am worried about transmission in schools because I know +
+ that kids can't be counted on to keep masks on at school. They take pics with friends shoulder to shoulder, take their masks off to talk, play contact sports. Outdoor situations like beach / backyard parties where social distancing is +
+ doable (if non-zero risk) don't worry me as much as indoor anything involving people under the age of 26 who have poorly developed judgment. It's developmental! No need to cast aspersions on young people, they just can't do +
+ it. Their brains are not fully mature and they can't understand the risks they incur. And what of the child who gets COVID, has minimal symptoms, yet infects older less healthy people in the household? It's one kind of sadness to +
+ have a parent die. It's another kind of sadness altogether to be the one to kill your parent (or teacher, or janitor). Can indoor school be done safely? I believe it can, but not for children. The younger the child, the less able to follow the rules.
