I did some research and reporting on how dangerous overzealous policing can be for people with diabetes. Here& #39;s what I found: https://www.thenation.com/article/society/diabetes-police/">https://www.thenation.com/article/s...
I started working on this early during protests, when a video of young woman begging a cop for the bag containing her insulin went viral. Turns out, the incident fit a pattern - a (very bad!) landmark SCOTUS case on police brutality, Graham vs. Connor, centered on a diabetic man
people w/ diabetes/other disabilities are especially vulnerable during police encounters, and comprise large # of use of force cases. People w/ conditions that require constant management, like diabetes, can be seriously hurt by police encounters disrupting free movement/routine
In my reporting, I heard stories from an unhoused man who has lost meds during street sweeps, and a man who suffered a heart attack in police custody due to insufficient insulin. Previous reporting/investigations have found several deaths along broadly similar lines
thank you to @anastasiakeeley for the edits!!!
