The longer I live in #JerseyCity, the more perplexed I am by grocery store economics.

#FoodDeserts are a huge issue, and parts of JC really DON'T have access to a full-service grocery store.

There's also a whole other issue around small chains and pricing...
We had a car this wknd so husband went to Stop & Shop, instead of Fine Fare or CTown.

3 lb "family pack" of ground turkey.
At our local stores, reg price: $12 ($4/pnd)
At S&S, reg price: $10 ($3.33/pnd)
S&S, manager's special: $4.55 !!

60% LESS than what we usually pay!
It was expiring "soon" and S&S marked it down to move it out.

When? 8/8.

Um. Our local stores will sell ON the expiration date with no markdown (they're allowed).

If you'll remember, Fine Fare on WSA was doing MUCH worse re expiration previously
Everything is cheaper at large chain grocery stores, a fact I didn't know until I moved here. My mom will BRING ME canned diced tomatoes from her suburban Shoprite bc they sell for 50 cents each there - over $1 each can at our small local stores.
I'm sure some of this is actual economics - Fine Fare & CTown are both smaller, solidly on city blocks, deliveries might be harder, etc.

But a large part of it, simply, is that they don't HAVE to be competitive.
It also didn't occur to me (hey there, suburban privilege) how much of budget advice doesn't work for smaller stores. It can be hard to "shop the sales." Some of our local grocery stores don't post online. I've never had manufacturers coupons tossed on my porch here.
No "Extreme Couponing" here folks.

Ctown's coupon policy: Each store is different.

Vs.

Shoprite: We love coupons and we double some and come learn more on this ENTIRE PAGE ABOUT THEM.
#FoodAcess in #JerseyCity requires systems level change.

In the meantime, support the amazing local organizing happening here, esp. community fridges!

West Side: Venmo: westsidecommunityfridge; $westsidefridge
If your kid if in #JerseyCity public schools, you've gotten/are getting a Pandemic EBT card - extra $ for food. ALL INCOMES ARE OKAY TO USE IT.

But if you feel like you don't "need" it...you CAN spend on family groceries then DONATE equivalent in $ for a #foodaccess group.
(It is still considered illegal to GIVE #pandemicEBT card to someone else, even though Jersey City's school food program is "universal" access.

It's a fed prog. Michigan officials says it's okay to USE the card to buy food and then DONATE THE FOOD)
