/ Rock-solid evidence of #genocide left behind by the Nazis. Where did the 1000s of matzevot, Jewish #gravestones from looted cemeteries, end up? Polish photographer Łukasz Baksik wrote a book about it. A thread on the fate of these stones. (this one became a grindstone)
/ This stone was one of many used to pave a courtyard of a Polish farm. Stones last longer than those who "repurposed" them do. No one has any idea where these originated.
/ After the stones were looted from destroyed Jewish cemeteries, someone thought of cutting them up into pavers. The identity of the person on the stone is now gone forever. (photo from a square in the town of Inowrocław, in northern Poland)
/ The original old Jewish cemetery in Prague, a lovely place, 1904 image:
/ Here fragments of looted stones are found in the wall of a farm building in Poland, likely one of hundreds to use Jewish tombstones in construction.
/ Here a tombstone fragment was used to build a sandbox in a town square in the city of Szczecin, in northwestern Poland.
/ There's something particularly sad about this one, as names can still be read on these fragments (a cowshed in rural Poland). Families once gathered to mourn when these stones were first erected (?where?)
/ A Jewish tombstone "repurposed" as a grindstone or a wheel, and then abandoned on a Polish farm somewhere. Look at the lions of Judah on this one, and imagine the time it took to carve them.
/ This example is particularly offensive: a Jewish looted stone was turned around and the blank side used to create a Christian gravestone. The origin is clearly visible to all who pass by. . . .
/ 1000s of looted tombstones used by Nazis to build roads in Poland, discovered later by locals; this is in Gora Kalwaria, once home to the Ger sect of Hasidim. https://www.jpost.com/diaspora/jewish-tombstones-used-by-nazis-to-build-roads-found-in-gur-589579
/ It is true that < 1% of the 108 bill. people born in the past 50,000 years have marked graves (if that many). Gravestones decay naturally; trees fall on them. But this racially-inspired destruction and looting is not natural. It's a horrific example of where hatred takes us.
/ Jewish tombstones also routinely turn up in #Lviv Ukraine road construction. This area was home to high ranking SS and German police; road paved by prisoners of #Janowska concentration camp. https://forgottengalicia.com/jewish-traces-in-lviv-tombstones-turned-to-pavement/
