THREAD: Why Astroworld changed my life and so many others
I don’t expect anybody to read this but every time I think of this album and the whole tour, I get emotional because of the impact it had on me so I want to share.
Lets start with the release night. It was senior year and I had to wake up at 5 am. I’m ngl, I wasn’t even hip to rap like that and didn’t care to stay up. It was the biggest mistake ever because that morning I was in aw of how amazing the album was.
I was in the car with my best friend driving to school and Stargazing played for the first time and I hadn’t heard anything like it. The atmosphere, beat switch, and energy was wild. I knew I was going to be hooked on Travis Scott and music from there on.
I used to only like hits. I was the most basic casual fan and Sicko Mode was my favorite song. I was cringe and it was all I played. I then got a got a girl friend a few months later. This is significant for many reasons.
So fast forward to October and I’m still bumping the album. It grew off of me a little, but knowing me, I still LOVED Sicko Mode. Then I get a call.
It’s my girlfriend and she puts in on FaceTime. What do I see? Tickets to the Astroworld tour in Louisville. A two hour drive from where I live. I was excited, but I had no idea what I was going to witness. I knew he brought energy to his shows but i had no clue what to expect.
So November 19th of 2018 rolls around and I’m beyond excited to experience a hip hop concert with my girlfriendhttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💀" title="Schädel" aria-label="Emoji: Schädel">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💀" title="Schädel" aria-label="Emoji: Schädel"> No, it was more than that.
The whole day was crazy. It was cold and cloudy but the drive was so fun because I blasted the whole setlist on the drive there. We walked around the city and the atmosphere was amazing with the concert looming. Then we waited in line for hours waiting to get in.
Then the show began. Sheck Wes came out with his infectious energy and it was the first time I’ve ever gotten an adrenaline rush at a show. The mosh pits were crazy and I don’t think you can truly appreciate Sheck until you see him live.
Trippie Redd and Gunna went crazy but then it was time for Travis. The movie started playing before Stargazing and I was in for the best night of my life. Literally. I can’t describe the feelings of being at that show. It feels like a drug.
“IM BEHINDDDDDD YOUUU” if you know you know. Travis comes up and from there on, Stargazing became one of my favorite songs of all time. Nothing beats seeing Stargazing live. The transition between the beat switch Is the most adrenaline I have ever felt. It set the tone.
He keeps going with his high energy and psychadelic visuals that had me star struck. I’ve never had sensory overload like this in my life and I’ve travelled a ton. I left the concert so happy and energetic. My girlfriend was amazing for this.
After this, I was hooked. It wasn’t just Sicko Mode anymore, I became a borderline stan. I researched all of his older music before Owl Pharaoh and was obsessed about his whole discography and couldn’t turn his music off. I was also obsessed with the Houston scene.
That lead me to really starting to check out Don Toliver who is also from Houston. Can’t Say was arguably my favorite song and that lead me to Donny Womack. I heard Diva, and knew he was up next and legit. I was now a huge fan of Don Toliver. Seeing him live helped too.
Then February rolled around and I find out Travis Scott is coming to my city for leg 2 and I immediately copped tickets with the person I first heard the album with. It was another special experience especially because I knew every word to every song this time.
After the second show, I was even more obsessed to the point of it being annoying how much I would play his music. I got so intrigued by his influences I became a Cudi and Ye fan. That in turn led me to become a fan of hip hop and I think I’m now at the point...
Where I’m super knowledgeable about hip hop and the culture which surrounds it. It got to the point where I would go and research trap and I eventually made my ways backward a little into 90s rap. Yes, Astroworld got me obsessed with music.
It got me obsessed to the point of wanting to produce music and now I might get my very first placement as a producer and I might want to do this for a living. It literally changed my life.
