So I promised @a_c_harvey I would do a thread about this episode buuuut ive been a bit apprehensive about doing so because I dont like sharing my opinion/thoughts on things unprovoked #MindMyBusinessAndSipHerbalTea vibes buuut here goes https://twitter.com/bmj_latest/status/1290225689740947456
So here is why i loved recording this episode. Firstly definitions - Shame is an unpleasant self-conscious emotion typically associated with a negative evaluation of the self; withdrawal motivations; and feelings of distress, exposure, mistrust, powerlessness, and worthlessness
A key moment for me was when @DrChloeBeale mentioned the whole "This is just something i ask everyone". You're already assuming the answer is no. In addition, who ACTUALLY benefits from this statement? you? or the patient?
In the episode we touched on shame in MedEd but one aspect we didnt have time to talk about is STUDENTS. Med students are actually wild. We shame each other ALL THE TIME. I remember a really awkward exchange during one exam period a few years ago
I was leaving the library at ~10pm after studying all day. A colleague LITERALLY stopped me in the corridor and exclaimed – “omg you’re leaving now??” and I was very taken aback. I was like why is this child trying to be an enemy of progress.
My G then proceeded to TEST MY KNOWLEDGE like I had to prove to him that I’ve studied enough... #EverybodyIsMad
The next aspect was how invested you can be in your patients as a doctor... I for one did NOT go into medicine to become a Martyr. There needs to be a balance. back in the day when i was doing 12 hr days as a TA but only being paid for 7 was... yeaaa
in my limited experience of working, the workplaces that move the maddest are the ones that preach "we're all in this together", "we're a family", and incredibly antiquated ideas of professionalism. Before anyone comes for me, if the shoe fits... 👀👀👀
A lot of the issues we face are systemic. Part of the reason some doctors appear to be incredibly cold and unfeeling are systemic. doctors cant afford to be apolitical. It's in our patients best interests and just as importantly, OUR own interests.
If we ask for society to be better, a lot of issues our patients face will be minimized.
FINALLY, as i concluded this thread it is becoming increasingly obvious the reason i was so apprehensive about posting this thread IS shame lol #Yikes
All the thoughts of "Who da HELL does he think he is writing stuff". "Why does he think people care about his opinion or reflections" etc etc are very much prevalent
Even after recording this episode (therapy session) with @a_c_harvey, @lilycopping & @LuciaOC_ (+VoxPop from @DrChloeBeale) , I still had/have this negative evaluation of self and worry about being exposed... lol

I guess we all still gots some work tah do :P
