While decentralisation was a topic mainly for ideologically inspired groups such as libertarians, cypherpunks and privacy advocates it is real and present. It is time that enterprises start to pay serious attention
Due to massive outsourcing of activities since the '90s and the introduction of ERP systems, the complexity within the firm has reduced. But inter-firm complexity has risen.
And where ERP systems came to the rescue within the enterprise, this didn't happen between enterprises. Almost on the contrary: it has become very apparent that despite digitalisation, the information flow between enterprises knows many hurdles.
Information asymmetry leads to all kinds of problems in a market and it certainly has helped the rise of all kinds of brokers (third parties) which undoubtedly has increased cost on industry level.
But also on the level of the single firm as the number of people in contracting, procurement and compliance has risen. No wonder it's especially these functions in the firm that are showing an interest in decentralisation.
My hypothesis is that if we were to treat (certain) complex inter-firm systems as true decentralised systems and allowing them to function as such, they would perform better (more efficient, more resilient, etc).
Building the proofs for this and any contribution is very welcome!
