Unpopular opinion: “God told me” can be the basis of personal conviction or private obedience. But please I beg you, it cannot be the singular basis for conversation with others. Such a phrase is so final, so closed off that by existence it shuts off further discourse. 1
This false idea that God can be so illogical, so unexplainable and ‘foolish-sounding’ sounds scriptural but is actually a fall out of laziness. Engage with your convictions. Find language for it in social context. Acquire some empathy and persuasion skills. Pray for wisdom. 2.
I think (and I am no Bible scholar) when scripture says the wisdom of God is foolishness to men, it refers to hierarchy of knowledge, insight that is so high up the rung of our daily interactions, that we are unable to connect with it in our current consciousness. 3.
God is neither unintelligent nor incoherent. If God told you that you will be president, no problem. But you cannot run your campaign based on God told you. It is not faith. It is laziness. Can we prioritize excellence and empathy and putting in the good work of persuasion? 4.
The church needs to learn that spiritual gifts (I say this loosely) can edify but it is not a strategy for social discourse. E.g You can pitch an idea to investors based on a dream but you cannot justify its validity singularly on that dream. U will need to show the numbers. 5.
To believe is to give yourself to the lifelong work of learning and wisdom. We stand at the intersection of what is seen and what is unseen. Our job is to translate. Take your God said and give it language in science, politics, entertainment. Do the work. We all need to level up
