In your opinion, what is the SINGLE most important piece of advice you can give to a budding author?

I'll show you mine if you show me yours...

For what it's worth, my (unpopular) 1 piece of advice is:

Put your ego aside & learn to see when your writing is terrible, or you will waste years of your time. Blood, sweat and tears mean nothing. Ultimately, if it's bad, it's bad, no matter how much research or 'soul' is in it

Some WONDERFUL suggestions so far.
