Now the furore has died down (somewhat), there are plenty of positives as well as a host of things to work on for next season. Some things require better personnel, while others need Lampard and co. to learn from their experiences and make the necessary adjustments/tweaks.
This is very much a work in progress, and evaluating the season in absolute terms is pretty naïve. Lampard is the first manager #CFC have hired who isn't the finished article in terms of their ideas and execution. You either recognise that this is a process or you don't.
Importantly, this doesn't equate to a free pass. We have witnessed ongoing issues this season that have seen little progress in terms of improvement. Naturally, people will question tactics, selections, game management etc., as you do with anyone. But critique in context.
This season has been about establishing a platform to build upon over the next few seasons. It has not been about Lampard being punch perfect. Now, it is up to the club + Lampard to improve the playing squad to close the significant gap between Chelsea and Liverpool/City.
Playing philosophies generally take 2-4 seasons to really embed themselves. W/ Lampard developing his ideas (while also implementing them) trying to build something sustainable will take time. Structure + patterns should improve over time.
In the last three season Chelsea have finished 30pts (17/18), 26pts (18/19) and 33pts (19/20) behind the champions. This isn't something that can be rectified overnight - it's about long-term development and execution; not knee-jerk overreactions.
