NEW RESEARCH: The future of Gen-Z is at risk unless they are a top priority in the pandemic recovery plan. Today’s new @hnhcommunity report surveyed over 2000 under 25s & found them pressured, powerless & pessimistic - but still hopeful.

More than half (55%) of under 25s feel that the coronavirus outbreak has limited their options for the future and 51% feel it will cause huge long-term disruption to their future prospects. Only half think they will have a good job and a decent place to live in five years.

(2/9)
More than half of young people state mental health in the three greatest issues they personally face. Young women and young people from black and Asian backgrounds are most likely to report feeling under pressure in their day-to-day lives.

(3/9)
Three quarters of under 25s believe that politicians don’t care what young people think - esp young women, 80% of whom believe that. Only 5% of young women say the political system works well. Almost half (48%) U25s don't feel well represented in political discussion.

(4/9)
Gen Z sexism: 50% of young men thought ‘feminism has gone too far & makes it harder for men to succeed’, 23% disagreed that it was more dangerous to be a woman than a man, 18% held a negative view of feminists & 16% believed feminism had no role in today’s society

Six @hnhcommunity & @Rosiecarte recommendations:

1) A pandemic recovery plan that prioritises young people – developed through nationwide youth citizen panels

2) Value wellbeing not just economics - fund pastoral care in schools, colleges, social care & youth services.

(6/9)
3) Lower the voting age to 16

4) Rule out a Gen Z harming hard Brexit & guarantee access to Erasmus+ scheme

5) Block pathways to hate - govt must legislate against online harms & tech companies must make content moderation their #1 priority

(7/9)
6) Make tackling sexism and misogyny in schools & colleges a policy priority NOW. FE & uni's must take a zero-tolerance approach to sexual harassment. Policy makers must better understand how misogyny and racism intersect, particularly as harms women of colour.
