Officer, it is considered assault (similarly how simply throwing a rock is assault) at which the peaceful protest then becomes a riot. The police are under protocol to break up riots by any means possible. The thing is that ~12% of people in the crowd are undercover-

Cops, who are slipping between the protesters and actively identifying the rioters that are planning on throwing rocks or people who have weapons( firearms, homemade explosives, etc.) And profiling them for arrest. Once the protest gets disrupted, officers cant simply-

Say "sorry guys, i need you all to step aside so we can arrest the guys behind you" because by then, those people are back blending into the crowd after picking up a dropped sign. This was a tactic used during the midtown reno riot by rioters (who werent even NV citizens) who-

Started the riot from within the crowd, causing the protest to be forfeit and become a riot.
Now, i should say that I believe that there are extremely corrupt and prejudiced officers in the police force, and for that reason, we have idiots that are probably trained in 2 days

Who were high school dropouts that wanted to have power, but there are legitimately good officers in the force.
The militaristic means used to control riots is horrific and shouldn't be used, and im not trying to defend the methods, im just trying to shed light on why the riots-

Back to arrests:
Arrests made using unmarked vehicles: There is no part of this that is legal, and it breaks nearly every regulation based off restraint and arrest.
Arrests on random protesters:
75 percent of those siezed were probably rioters not even from that state-

Undercover officers: do their best with descriptions (using earpieces to communicate to the front line), but when everyone huddled together and multiple people wearing similar things, this is what causes false arrests

USE OF TEAR GAS, PEPPER SPRAY, RUBBER BULLETS, AND BRUTE FORCE
Tear gas is horrific, but its just an irritant, at least its not mustard gas
Pepper spray, again, horrific, but again, its just an irritant
Im not saying im okay with it, but it could be way worse-

Rubber Bullets: a horrific showing of lack of training
Brute force, again, horrific, but its the bare minimum when it comes to riot protocol when nobody clears out.

Again, Im not okay with any of the police brutality and racism, i just wanted to shed light that often times, cameras arent even opened until the riot breaks out. If you hate me after this thread, then by all means do so. I just wanted to relay information...
