My favourite memory of #JohnHume was taking a group of German students on a walking ghost tour around the city. As I was telling them one story at the corner of St Eugene’s Cathedral he stopped for a chat and said ‘I won the Nobel peace prize you know’. He was delighted when I
told him that we were all very proud of him and loved him very much for that and off he went. The students were amused by it and I’m not sure they believed me when I told them it was all true. We continued walking to the Bogside and I watched their expressions when they saw the
mural of him and other civil rights leaders on one of the cable walls. One turned to me and said ‘so it really is true!’ Cue all their phones coming out as they googled #JohnHume and imagine their delight at having met a Nobel prize recipient. And that was part of his strength,
that even in his later years he could inspire & delight people of all ages. His tireless work & comittment to the civil rights movement & his energy in helping bring peace to our streets will not be forgotten. My condolences to his family & friends. He was much loved. #JohnHume
