XL's ascensions are truly fascinating:
The 1rst one was all due to his pure and naive will of saving people, leading him to his fall.
His 1rst banishment knocked a lot of senses about the reality of humanity; he lost hope, then regained faith thanks to a simple gesture-

-by a passerby.
However, the pure and naive is gone. XL learned what humanity is, as its worst. But still, his conviction has been preserved. The strength of his heart is what led him to his 2nd ascension.
Which is why his 2nd banishment is so important.

He felt the need to connect with the people, to work on himself and on his purpose. Why does he save people? Who are the people? He travelled, got involved in different situations with different persons and learned life.

His body may have suffered the worst, his heart has been unchanged and he still advances and works towards his goal. His 2nd banishment gave him the peace of mind and the serenity that he needed.
Truly the embodiment of "body in abyss, heart in paradise".

And to finish, I find it really interesting how we had absolutely no news about his 3rd ascension. It is thanks to his deeds, the way he takes action and resolves each of the cases, that we understand how fitted he is to be a god. I love the subtlety of this narration.

So to sum up, I just love how all this experience broke, shattered and then re-forged his belief and made him the man he is today.

I know that I'm writing something so obvious, but it still feels good to put it into words
