Breaking: John Hume has died

News confirmed by his family in a statement.
The civil rights campaigner, Nobel Peace Prize winner and SDLP stalwart died at Owen Mor nursing home in his beloved Derry after a short illness.

One of the most influential figures in the modern history of this island.
John Hume's family end the statement:

"It seems particularly apt for these strange and fearful days to remember the phrase that gave hope to John and so many of us through dark times: we shall overcome."
It is impossible to overstate the impact John Hume's life had on this island.

He was a truly monumental figure in the long, long journey to peace who inspired so many over so many decades.

Truly and honestly, ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.
The last time I saw John Hume was at the funeral of another huge Derry figure, Martin McGuinness.

Parents and grandparents and grandchildren were queueing up for photos with John.

A huge deal of affection was felt towards him in his home city. https://twitter.com/newschambers/status/844948368958898177?s=19
"All conflict is about the same thing, no matter where it is. It's about difference... The message we have to get across... is that difference is an accident of birth."
The great love of his life, his wife Pat, said in 2018 that John Hume didn't remember much of what he achieved in his life - Sunningdale, the Anglo-Irish Agreement, the Good Friday Agreement.

It is a testament to his brilliance, that the island will never forget that work.
SDLP leader @columeastwood:

"Never has the beatitude rung truer: blessed be the peacemakers.

"The life of John Hume will forever be a blessing upon this island since Ireland is now blessed by the peace he gifted to us all."
Statement from the Taoiseach:

"John Hume was a great hero and a true peace maker... All people on this island will give thanks for his life.”
It is a strange thing that John Lewis & John Hume would both pass in such a short space of time.

Civil Rights in the North was inspired by Civil Rights in the US.

In 2013, Lewis and Hume linked arms as they crossed the Peace Bridge - huge mutual respect
