TREAD Submitted my synopsis for #CambridgeWorldHistory of Sexualities, honoured to take part! My chapter is entitled Sex in #Shanghai in the 20th Century: Intimate Negotiations, where I explicate the unique historical and social conditions that allowed Shanghai to create
an urban environment of what I refer to as #intimatenegotiations, moving beyond what cultural scholars such as Leo Ou-fan Lee (1999) presented as the flowering of urban culture for it has been a process of negotiations with an environment that made it both possible and difficult.
This urban environment of intimate negotiations allowed, as I will demonstrate, sex workers such as #DongZhujun (1900-1997) to rise as the founder of Jinjiang Hotels, Shanghai men to become a national joke for being domestic, It girls such as Wei Hui (1973-) to fall back into a
binary sexual liberation from Chineseness and later an advocate who capitalised on gendered traditionalism, and the growth of LGBT activism towards the second millennium. Shanghai as the pioneer of gender equality and sexual modernity must be viewed through those negotiations,
through which people transform themselves, the city, and the definition of belonging, freedom, and modernity. End thread.
