Clearing this up from a korean perspective:
These sets of tweets weren’t meant to cause harm to black atiny or the black community in general, but I can understand how these tweets are all about perspective and how the western perspective on this wording is A LOT different then our own in korea
In the first place is that in Korea until recently it had not been shown in light that cultural approbation is a bad thing, in general a majority did not think twice about engaging in other cultural activities because it was never taught that we shouldn’t do that
In korea we are very excited to have foreigners come practice our culture and even putting them in hanbok and helping them select the perfect one, along with learning traditional dances and more
So when it comes to other cultures it was easy for us to assume that it was/is perfect okay to indulge into because we ourselves like when people indulge into ours! It’s a high level of honor to have others join into our cultural situations for holidays and temples etc
As a society we really do not understand that the west is far different in views than our own
The imperialist comment is because back during japanese imperialism we were modernized EXTREMELY quickly and were forced to understand their culture and language instead of our own and even get rid of our names
And America during the war making us have to learn how to survive even more in such a quick pace
So it doesn’t come easy to koreans when we get told not to do something because it can feel as though the west is now forcing us into their ideologies even though it is just trying to teach us correctness to understand others feelings overseas in other cultures
Understanding cultural appropation is a very new thing for us within korea and it’s not the easiest for Koreans to understand because it can feel like an attack on us
I don’t know how to explain myself good but please understand that ae’s tweets were in korean perspective and not a western
We as a nation are becoming more aware everyday especially since kpop is going international more and more and we are being taught the western perspective but please understand our perspective as well when we talk about our nation not understanding
