My best friend is a mycologist who basically started his own field with his phd "cognitive mycology" -- he is a nutcase in the best way. I will ineloquently describe some of his coolest ideas in thred from our conversations camping 2gether. (Delicious n auspicious marasmius)
He has studied systems of fungi that he believes at least as large as a thousand miles. One theory of his is that when fungi reinforces tree roots, it is similar to myelin sheath over human neuron and process of myelination
He believes they help plans communicate and act as neurons, giving trees access to higher order cognitive functions. The gigantic fungal systems carry information across vast distances, connecting ecosystems within bioregions that help plants make decisions.
Maybe this is how trees know when to shed their leaves in autumn, he says. Maybe this is why some forests do this at a different rate than others (less/weaker connections to the neural network of fungi)
He talked about studies teaching blind humans to see with their tongues, fingers, etc. They could name various colors and shapes with tongue -- pigments all tasted the same. He says might suggest that trees and plants can and have learned to "see" us.
If u were watching Varg's channel for a long time, u might remember when he brought up how noxious weeds and pollen tend to grow in rings around urban centers. Only in recent times are humans very allergic to pollen and certain types of foods. Follow this idea here...
What if some day soon, mycologists discover that these fungal systems use boolean logic and binary..? What if the land really IS watching you? What if it is keeping count? What if it is intelligent enough to know who to target? tl;dr if u litter u are on nature's hitlist
So my mycologist friend advocates for animism by default. Show reverence to the land.... A sort of Pascal's Wager for the trees. The animists were right all along. Maybe we should be a bit more careful about our agriculture and creature comforts. The trees are watching.
