Based on the reactions of my last tweet, I’ve concluded I will see what I “missed out on” with Avril Lavinge.

Also apparently “out-of-touch junior high vocaloid weeb” was a more relatable childhood experience than I expected
“Girlfriend” (2009) - I remember my 5th grade music teacher getting us to listen to the French version to see how music can be fun in different languages.

Both my teacher and my mother were quick to change to a different song when it got to the lyrics “Motherfucking princess” 😆
“Girlfriend” (cont’d) - I do admittedly vibe with the petty jealousy of being the (gay) third wheel to your straight friends’ week-long relationships.

Plus the guitar riffs and repeated “hey-heys” are fun

9/10 for high school drama and my censored childhood music exposure
“Sk8er Boi” (2010) - I do know this one for its sheer memetic capacity and for a parody written by a mutual who will remain anonymous 😉

7/10 Catchy song about missed opportunities/not being shallow but I can’t help but feel like incels made it about themselves. Still fun though
“Hello Kitty” (2014) - I didn’t realize how much whiplash I’d get from pop-dubstep and rapping in a Canadian music artist’s song about an iconic Japanese mascot character.

3/10 I imagine this is what a Hello Kitty doll at a college rager feels like. No, I will not elaborate.
“Complicated” (2010) - Interesting to see slow punk songs measure like country ballads without the thick southern drawl.

Except in this case it’s Avril occasionally trying for a Britpunk accent?

6/10 Song about a two-faced dude was made “so damn complicated” by shifting accents
“The Best Damn Thing” (2009) - I’m always a sucker for self-love anthems. A punkish anthem calling out an absolute dirtbag that can’t handle you makes it even better.

10/10 Making an entire punk cheerleader squad spell out how you take no shit is a power move I’m living for.
“Hot” (2009) - Music video seems to have cuts between a red carpet walk, a backstage corset fitting, a dominatrix POV and a burlesque stage show?

I’m detecting some double-meanings

5/10 Don’t feel like I’m part of the target demographic but...you go, Avril. Live your best life.
