Many things, Richard. 1) I coined the term yacht rock. https://twitter.com/richardmarx/status/1290122556792479744
2) Yacht rock isn't an insult. It's a metaphor for high quality craftsmanship, a masterful melding of jazz and R&B with rock, a sound developed in SoCal after choices like Loggins picking Bob James to produce his solo debut so his music could have jazz flavor like The Crusaders.
3) Hall & Oates aren't yacht rockers. Their Philly soul sound and wild genre swings on their albums are not quite the smooth sounds we're looking for in yacht rock.
4) Not successful, but this is more than 10 seconds of a song I wrote:
5) Co-wrote this one, also not "successful," but sung by successful dudes and seen by millions:
6) Here's our webshow that coined the term, watch this and tell me we don't love this music:
7) You've sung backup on yacht rock songs, so you are in essence yacht rock personnel. Had your solo career started 3 years earlier, you would FOR SURE have at least one yacht rock song.
8) I love you and your music so much. Your big hits are some of my all-time favorite pop songs of all time. So please, Richard Marx, go easy on me.
9) Shitty cover bands like Yacht Rock Revue and misguided radio stations like SiriusXM Yacht Rock has dragged the term through the mud, lumping in hacks like Rupert Holmes and Jimmy Buffet with skilled masters like Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Steely Dan, Jay Gradon...
...David Foster, Michael Omartian, Quincy Jones, Jeff Porcaro, David Paich, Steve Lukather, Bill Champlin, Patti Austin, Brenda Russell... I could go all day.
