It started earlier yesterday when we getting some cut-eye walking in Byward Market, where some folks were staring at us for some reason. Nothing major, just noticed that there was some friction.
Then today we started noticing a bunch of flyers posted around the City Hall surrounding area with lots of racist messaging. Essentially it was trying to conflate dog eating, Chinese people, being CCP pawns, implying that we were a threat to Canada as a nation.
We got pretty angry and ripped it down, but I unfortunately forgot to take a picture of it at the time.
Then as we walked back later in the evening, we crossed the street in front of a few white guys in a truck. They loudly shouted something at us that I couldn't make out initially (wasn't sure they were talking to us).
Then they made "pow pow pow" noises at us, pretending to shoot at us. Then called us "fucking Chinese". My read was that their goal was to make us feel unsafe in the neighbourhood, and to an extent they achieved their goal. Although b/c of all the racism, it wasn't unexpected.
Anyways, that's the nature of Canada now in 2020. I don't want to hear any "this doesn't represent our country/city whatever". These right-wing racist and xenophobic politics have been brewing for years and now it is open season to explicitly target non-whites.
Appreciate the messages of love and solidarity from so many. Just a reminder that this anti-Chinese racism is *extremely* common. From Angus Reid survey of Chinese Canadians:

50% verbally harassed
43% threatened or intimidated
29% made to feel they are health/safety risks
That's why I say this is the *norm*, not an exception.

Also why as an HKer, I will never fuck with white nationalists, no matter how "strong against the CCP" they appear. The enemy of your enemy is not necessarily your friend.
