We are at a critical juncture where the calls for structural change, including defunding the police and abolishing prisons to remedy state violence and racial capitalism are the pre eminent demand of our movement....1/7
But what we need from you all is sustained commitment. You can’t be “abolish police” with us one day, and demanding the incarceration of border crossers the next.
You can’t be black lives matter for a moment, we need you to be black lives matter, always. This means showing up, speaking up and standing up consistently.
And we know sustaining any kind of action, protest, rebellion for a long period of time is exhausting. We know because we are battle weary from 232 years of resistance.

But this battle can not be won any other way.
I reflect on how far the abolition movement has come in just 12 months. Years ago when many of us were musing about abolishing the police we were met with hostility. But now abolition is a household name.
If you want to see real change beyond just imagining abolition please commit fully to this movement. This doesn’t mean you can’t take a breath or turn away occasionally, but it does mean being present in the moments that matter,
amplifying the voices of those who are qualified to speak, and calling out racisms and injustice every single time you bear witness to it.
