On July 31, UNC Police said via social media that officers would be near campus dorms during move-in next week (linked below). In response, UNC student leaders and organizations signed a statement in opposition, requesting the action be rescinded by 9pm today. UNC Police tweeted a quotation from David Perry, chief of UNC Police, earlier today stating the department will continue work "to make the campus an inviting place for students of color & to renew the confidence and belief in our officers." https://twitter.com/UNCPolice/status/1290023292732968960?s=20">https://twitter.com/UNCPolice...
University leaders have not responded to the statement. I will continue following the situation as it develops, for @dailytarheel
UPDATE 1/ @KevinGuskiewicz responded to the statement from UNC student leaders at 9:57pm Sunday in an email obtained by the DTH. Guskiewicz wrote that he valued their opinions, but “there may be a misunderstanding of the role our police officers” in welcoming community members.
2/ “It’s my understanding that our police officers have always assisted during the move-in period, so it would be helpful to hear of specific instances which are now creating problems for students and their parents,” Guskiewicz wrote.
3/ The email stated that the Chancellor’s leadership team would meet with members of student government to understand their concerns and "address them as necessary."
4/ At 11:18pm Sunday, in an email response to Guskiewicz obtained by the DTH, UNC student leaders said they are prepared to meet as early as Monday at 10am.
5/ In the response, RHA President Kira Griffith expressed disappointment because "all the signatories were not copied in a response by 9pm." The response from Guskiewicz was only sent to Griffith.
