@American_Heart published THIS in 2020 arguing against affirmative action & stating “Diversity doesn’t save lives”.

There are many reasons why this piece is harmful outlined by #MedTwitter, but I want to focus on the fact that the author was of Asian decent.

While Asians have endured immigration restrictions, hostility/prejudice (👀: hate crimes in light of #COVID19), it is IMPERATIVE that we recognize that our disadvantages are not equivalent to Black people.

The paragraph below from the article on “Asian Plight” is inaccurate.
As the battle against affirmations action rages, it is telling that a minority group is turning against other minority groups instead of addressing the fact that research shows that white students are the main beneficiaries of admission preferences.
Many Asians continue believe in the idea of the model minority. The idea of the model minority is problematic because it suggests that the inequities of our system and racism are not contributing factors when comparing the “success” of Asians to other minorities.
I went to a high school that was 75% Asian and in my junior year, @CNN did a highly offensive piece called “Are Asian Students Smarter?” further perpetuating the model minority myth

Why is this important?

Asians make up ~5% of the US population, BUT more than 15% of all physicians per @AAMCtoday. This needs to be addressed in #medicine if we are going to be better providers, colleagues, & humans.

TLDR:
🔸Racism is alive, well, and publishable in medicine
🔹People of Asian decent have a responsibility to recognize our privilege despite our own experiences with racism.

Fin.
