I grew up reading the same Golden Age science fiction that Elon did. Space ports with gleaming rockets that would take you to new worlds. It's all bunk.

Only our own solar system is within range of human spaceflight, and none of that is even close to habitable. Any other "exoplanets" are so far away, that it doesn't really matter.

If we can't even organize ourselves to save our current civilization, on the only habitable planet, then how can we build a new civilization on a new planet? Look at the USA itself. A new world, a new start, but they brought all the old human diseases with them.

The founders of the USA hoped to start fresh, but they brought slavery, genocide, destruction, inequality... What makes this century's dilettante rocketmen any better? How will they build a sustainable offworld utopia when they can't make their city or company into a nice place?
