The fear of failure in mirrorball: A thread
So we all know that Taylor surpasses hits and streams at this point - her music is artwork. But it doesn’t mean she doesn’t fear failure (I mean, she’s Taylor Swift - an icon). Just look at mirrorball, one of the most emotional songs on folklore imo 🥺
“I can change everything about me to fit in” - Taylor feels the constant need to reinvent herself, because she worries that people won’t listen to her music anymore. Every era is so drastically different and it’s partly to keep her fresh (even though she’s a legend).
“I’ve never been a natural, all I do is try, try, try”. I think we can ALL agree that Taylor is a hit machine at this point, but it’s taken her a lot of hard work and practice to get to where she is - and she still keeps that up today.
“I’m still trying everything to keep you looking at me” I don’t think this is an attention thing - but it’s a need to be seen and understood. Taylor tries her best to communicate her authentic emotions to us through songwriting. She wants us to understand 🥺
If you’re wondering why this is relevant, Taylor thought Lover might be her last chance at success because of the way the industry works: now she’s out here still breaking records with a surprise alternative album. This is why getting cardigan to #1 was so important :)
Anyway, if you’ve stuck with me for this long, thank you! I don’t mean anything negative by this thread, I thought I’d just share one of my interpretations of mirrorball. Okay bye
