As someone with type 1 diabetes in America it is incredibly disparaging sometimes thinking about how much freedom has been taken away from me because of insulin and healthcare costs, and I’m honestly so tired.
I’m scared to take chances in my career because my life is actually on the line. If I don’t have health insurance, my medication and medical device costs are thousands and thousands of dollars. I can’t even get my meds without seeing a specialist that costs hundreds.
Make no mistake, #T1D is FATAL diagnoses that is only MADE CHRONIC by the fact that we inject ourselves with insulin to survive. Read that again.
I would die without insulin and U.S. pharmaceutical companies like @sanofi and @LillyPad among others take that as an opportunity to price gouge us because we have no other choice. Pay it or die. Go into debt or die. Get a job with healthcare or die.
Life as a diabetic is ALREADY HARD ENOUGH. Why do we allow people to value human life SO LITTLE that they let people die because they can’t afford insulin? That they let people’s quality of life suffer because they want to buy a yacht?
I’m feeling particularly sad about this today, so excuse me if it brings you down but dammit I’m so tired of insulin affordability deciding my life for me. And I’m one of the fortunate ones. I can make the costs work if I keep living JUST SO. But I’m TIRED. #insulin4all NOW.
